Manu Vatuvei "The Beast" former professional rugby league player from New Zealand

Profile

Manu Vatuvei, widely known as "The Beast," is a former professional rugby league player from New Zealand whose imposing presence and powerful play left an indelible mark on the sport.

Born on March 4, 1986, in Auckland, he is of Tongan descent and became one of the most iconic figures in rugby league history. Manu's career began in 2004 when he debuted for the New Zealand Warriors in the National Rugby League (NRL). His combination of size, speed, and strength quickly made him a fan favorite and a formidable force on the field.

Manu's international career was equally impressive. He played a crucial role in New Zealand's 2008 Rugby League World Cup victory, a historic achievement for the Kiwis. Known for his try-scoring abilities, Manu became the first player in NRL history to score 10 or more tries in 10 consecutive seasons, a testament to his consistency and prowess as a winger. His achievements earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Player of the Year awards from the Warriors.

Despite his on-field success, Manu's life was not without challenges. Following his retirement from professional rugby league in 2017, after a final stint with the Salford Red Devils in the Super League, Manu faced significant personal struggles. In 2021, he was sentenced to prison for his involvement in drug trafficking, a stark contrast to his celebrated sports career.

Since his release on parole, Manu has dedicated himself to rebuilding his life and giving back to the community. He has been working closely with Dave Letele at the BBM (Buttabean Motivation) gym, where he helps run fitness classes and supports youth and employment programs. Manu's work at BBM, including assisting with food deliveries for the BBM FoodShare service, reflects his commitment to making a positive impact and using his experiences to guide others away from the mistakes he made.

Manu Vatuvei's journey is a powerful narrative of triumph, fall, and redemption, illustrating the complexities of life both within and beyond the world of sports.

This was a very special speech. It was raw but so honest that it really left a lump in everyone's throat. You couldnt hear a pin drop when they both talked. We loved the concept of Dave interviewing Manu and everyone was so engaged. We have had nothing but great comments about the talk. Auckland International Airport
