Jay is a multifaceted performer whose resilience and determination have defined his remarkable journey. Born in London in 1966 to a Holocaust survivor father of Polish-German descent and an English-Welsh mother, Jay grew up with the weight of history and the complexities of a challenging home life. His father, bearing the scars of the Warsaw Ghetto and unresolved trauma, struggled to nurture his children, presenting Jay with a turbulent and often painful childhood.
Facing physical adversity from birth, Jay was diagnosed with a severe disability affecting his feet and ankles, requiring revolutionary surgeries during his early years. Defying medical predictions that he would never play sports, climb mountains, or dance, Jay demonstrated extraordinary courage, undergoing groundbreaking procedures to reconstruct his ankles at the age of twelve. Despite months of recovery and relearning to walk, he never let his physical limitations stifle his dreams.
A creative soul from a young age, Jay sought solace and inspiration in theatre and film. At thirteen, he made his performing debut in Jonathan Miller’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, an experience that set him on the path to acting despite societal prejudices against disability in the arts. Overcoming significant barriers, including his father’s disapproval, Jay pursued his passion with unwavering resolve.
In 1991, Jay graduated with first-class honours from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and launched a career spanning more than three decades. From assisting with Russian theatre seasons in Wales to performing Shakespeare in Canada and teaching improvisation to Tibetan actors in India, his artistry has transcended borders. His extensive experience includes acclaimed performances on stage, screen, and television, as well as voice work for video games, cartoons, and documentaries.
Jay’s commitment to fostering talent extends to his work as a casting director and workshop facilitator, where he has mentored countless performers, helping them unlock their potential. His personal journey is a testament to his belief in the power of persistence and creativity, inspiring others to overcome their own challenges.
Now based in New Zealand’s South Island, Jay has embraced a new chapter alongside his wife Nikki and their three children. Their move from London to a vineyard in 2012 reflects his adventurous spirit and belief that anything is possible. Jay’s life and career are a powerful narrative of resilience, creativity, and the enduring pursuit of dreams.
