Brett McGregor's love of food began as a child watching his mother whizz up all manner of culinary creations. It was enhanced by his anthropology studies at university where food wasn't just the next meal but an experience of another culture. This spurred on years of travelling the globe eating and learning the joys of another country's food.
Background
After this time of discovery came the responsibility of fatherhood and a job as a teacher which took him travelling again to Hong Kong to work at an international school. (And of course sample more Asian cuisine!) On his return to New Zealand after landing a deputy principal job he entered MasterChef NZ and the rest is history.
He manoeuvres around the kitchen like a ninja and answers questions from the audience just as skilfully. Former Deputy Principal Brett McGregor's new career is a dream come true. New Zealand's Original Master Chef's life has gone from detentions and marking to TV gigs, culinary tours, food writing, cooking demonstrations and much more.
Brett's inspiration for cooking and trying new flavour combinations stems from places travelled, more often than not on a shoe string budget...like most kiwi adventurers. As his books demonstrate; his cooking is tasty, fresh and easy. This food philosophy translates to everyday kiwi kitchens, where he also demonstrates the use of seasonal ingredients to keep tasty, fresh meals affordable.
Current work
Brett is currently a Compass Group NZ Brand Ambassador and Executive Chef Strata Lounge Auckland International Airport. When not in the kitchen he enjoys treating himself to a well-earned pixie caramel and hanging out with his family. Never shy when it comes to food, he loves to tell a yarn and engage with his audience.
