Celebrating 35 Years in Business

Louise Ryburn
28 Nov 2024

As we celebrate 35 years as industry leaders, I'm filled with pride reflecting on my 23 years at the helm and the incredible evolution we've witnessed in the speaking industry.

In 1989, the landscape seemed simpler. Clients typically sought rugby stars, Olympians, or a "funny" after-dinner speaker to engage their audiences. Fast forward to 2024, and the demand has shifted to topics like resilience, leading through uncertainty, future trends and AI, mental health, peak performance, and stress management. These themes reflect the complexities of our world today and the evolving needs of our clients.

Our business is a mirror of society, reflecting changing priorities and expectations. Gone are the days when a speaker could simply turn up and deliver a speech. Now, they are integral to the event's success, participating in pre-event briefings, customising presentations, and delivering tangible value that justifies the investment.

One of our proudest achievements is our commitment to diversity in conference programming. Recognising the importance of representing all voices, we strategically increased our roster of female speakers and those from diverse cultural backgrounds years ago. This move not only enriched the conversations at events but also set a standard for inclusivity in the industry.

We've also worked tirelessly over the past 35 years to stay at the forefront of industry standards, ethics, and global best practices. Our early adoption of digital platforms—being the first speakers bureau in New Zealand to launch a website, and now developing portals—has allowed our speakers to reach audiences worldwide, breaking down geographical barriers.

Our founder, Debbie Tawse, revolutionised the speaking industry in New Zealand. She transitioned speakers from receiving modest compensation like meat packs and petrol vouchers to earning viable incomes, establishing Celebrity Speakers NZ as a respected brand and helping to set industry ethics and standards.

In my 23 years of leadership, I've been privileged to learn from countless industry leaders, coaches, experts, advocates, and inspirational figures. Each day brings new wisdom, but one constant message stands out: the importance of remaining true to our core value—changing lives one speech at a time.

Surviving the global financial crisis, the challenges of COVID-19, and tough economic conditions are among my proudest achievements. These trials tested our resilience, but they also highlighted the strength and dedication of our team. Their unwavering commitment was instrumental in navigating these challenges and ensuring our continued success.

Even after 23 years, the most rewarding part of my role is still receiving feedback that reminds us of our impact. Whether it's hearing that a speaker's message prevented a tragedy or that it inspired a profound change, these moments reinforce why we do what we do.

Looking ahead, the future of Celebrity Speakers NZ is full of potential. Our commitment to innovation, quality, and making a difference is stronger than ever. As we navigate this ever-changing world, I remain passionate about the vital role speakers will play in supporting and guiding others through these times. This is the fuel that drives us forward.
